Mama’s Greek Cuisine – Tarpon Springs

We took a trip to Tarpon Springs this afternoon – which has the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any city in the US.  Although we had Pork Loin with Peaches (recipe next post!) in the crock pot waiting for us at home, we wanted to try some of the famous Greek food while in the area.

We decided to try out Mama’s Greek Cuisine.  On first impression, the décor was kind of tacky, but the menu looked pretty authentic.  I liked the painting above our table – it’s the same style as a painting I had gotten in Mykonos (you can see mine below next to my hallway mirror).

Our waitress didn’t seem all too interested in us – she informed us that the credit card machine was down so they were only taking cash, then she walked away (which was pretty strange because soon after, we saw other customers paying by card).  When we got hold of her to order our food, she seemed disappointed that we weren’t ordering full meals – we told her we had a big dinner at home, but wanted to at least have some Greek food while we were in town.

We ordered the Shrimp Saganaki (flaming cheese) and Baklava – but we were informed they didn’t have baklava.  We decided to try the Galaktoboureko instead (a Greek custard pie).
The Saganaki came in a cast iron pan and included tomatoes, olive oil, spices and shrimp.  We were very happy with our appetizer choice – although the table next to us also ordered the flaming cheese and theirs was lit on fire right in front of their table (ours didn’t get the fancy presentation).
After our cheese dish our waitress came with two plates of the Galaktoboureko – although we had only ordered one dessert.  It may have been an honest mistake, but it seemed like she brought us two on purpose since we didn’t order enough food.

We enjoyed our food – although there were dozens of other Greek restaurants nearby so we’d probably try a different place next time and hope for better service. I read reviews others wrote on Yelp afterwards and it seems that many other people had similar complaints.  Most people seemed to recommend Hellas Restaurant instead (which was about a block away).

Mama’s Greek Cusine is located at 35 Dodecanese Blvd #40 Tarpon Springs, FL 34689 and is open from 11am – 10pm Monday through Sunday.
