Eggnog Hot Chocolate

Most of the country has been hit with unseasonably cold weather (some of the states up north have lows in the single digits already and it’s only mid-November!)  While 55 degrees probably sounds warm to most northerners, here in Florida I thought it was pretty chilly last night.

After walking around a bunch of shops already decorated with Christmas lights, we were in the holiday spirit, so we picked up some eggnog on the way home.  The Evan Williams brand is already pre-mixed with bourbon.  It is very rich, so you only need a small cup.

Since I was in the mood for a hot drink, I mixed my eggnog with hot chocolate.  The absolute best kind out there is from Williams Sonoma.  I worked there in high school – I’m now realizing that I should have used my discount more while I had it!  I love all their kitchen gadgets and treats.

Williams Sonoma’s Classic Hot Chocolate is made of bittersweet chocolate shavings – once you try it, you won’t be able to drink the powdered kind again.  Plus, their airtight can keeps the chocolate fresh (I’ve had this can since last year and it still tasted like new).

Just heat 1 cup milk in a small saucepan on medium-low heat until it starts to bubble.  Then add 5 tablespoons (yes, it’s a lot of chocolate…) to the pan and whisk together.  I poured mine into a mug, and then topped it off with the eggnog and a dash of nutmeg.  The eggnog will cool it down a bit, but as long as you serve it right off the stovetop, it should be the perfect drinking temperature.

Lance wanted a cold drink, so he served his eggnog over ice, and then stirred in a spoonful of the chocolate shavings.  They don’t dissolve in the cold drink, but the bits of chocolate make it extra decadent eggnog.

Thanksgiving is 2 weeks from today and Christmas is in 6 weeks!  This is my favorite time of the year.  Happy holidays everybody!
